The doubly-labelled water technique for measurement of energy expenditure in free-living animals.

چکیده
Energy is important at many different levels of organization in the living animal. Investigations of energetics may enhance our understanding of the evolution of animal traits, and in humans help towards tackling problems of energy balance, such as obesity. The doubly-labelled water technique is a non-in vasive method for direct measurement of the energy expenditure of free-living animals. This paper considers the theoretical foundation of the technique and details the simplifying assumptions. Validation studies, which compare the measurement made by the technique with simultaneous evaluations using conventional laboratory techniques, suggest the technique gives an estimate of energy expenditure with an accuracy of about 5%, when it is applied to vertebrates. Offsetting this, however, is the fact the technique provides invaluable information which can be collected in no other way.

Application of the Doubiy Labeied Water Technique for Studying Total Energy Expenditure in Young Chiidren: A Review
The doubly labeled water tecbnique represents an unobtrusive and noninvasive means lo measure total daily energy expenditure in free-living human subjects who are unaware that energy expenditure is being measured. When combined with measurement of resting energy expenditure, the doubly labeled water technique can also be used to estimate energy expenditure related to physical activity. The rela...
متن کاملThe potential use of the labelled bicarbonate method for estimating energy expenditure in man.
Two tracer methods have been used to assess energy expenditure in animals and humans: the doubly-labelled-water method (for animals Lifson et af . 1955; for humans Prentice, 1988; Coward, 1988) and the labelled bicarbonate method (for humans present paper; for animals Corbett er al. 1971). Whereas the doubly-labelled-water technique attempts to provide information about the energy expenditure o...
متن کاملEnergy requirements assessed using the doubly-labelled water method.
Energy requirements of animals and man were originally determined in intake–balance studies, measuring the energy intake to maintain energy balance. Nowadays energy requirements are preferably determined by measuring energy expenditure. During growth, energy expenditure is combined with a figure for energy deposition. The reasons for the switch from intake to expenditure measurements are twofol...
متن کاملChanges in body composition and energy expenditure after six weeks' growth hormone treatment.
Changes in body composition and energy expenditure were assessed in 15 children after six weeks of human growth hormone (hGH) treatment. Body composition measurements were made by stable isotope labelled water (H2(18)O) dilution, bioelectrical impedance, and skinfold thickness techniques. Energy expenditure was assessed both by indirect ventilated hood calorimetry (resting energy expenditure) a...
متن کاملMeasurement of energy expenditure.
Measurement of energy expenditure in humans is required to assess metabolic needs, fuel utilisation, and the relative thermic effect of different food, drink, drug and emotional components. Indirect and direct calorimetric and non-calorimetric methods for measuring energy expenditure are reviewed, and their relative value for measurement in the laboratory and field settings is assessed. Where h...
